Los Angeles celebrity stylist | How to become a successful stylist?

Los Angeles celebrity stylist | How to become a successful stylist?

As a Los Angeles celebrity stylist, your job can be very exciting and you can jump from one project to the next. In this blog article, I will give a couple of tips on how to become a successful Los Angeles celebrity stylist.

First of all, you will need to build your network and nurture relationships. As you start working, you’ll meet so many people that can help you along the way including brands, individuals, production companies or agencies.

As a celebrity stylist, you need to create your portfolio and figure out your style and what you are good at. For example, I started my career as a fashion designer but then quickly realized I’m better at styling so I pursued this career. There are many different categories of fashion styling as well, like celebrity styling, wardrobe styling, editorial styling, etc. Find out what kind of work really speaks to you, and pursue that.

Do your research. For every project or event, you will need to spend hours working on your laptop and develop your lookbook which you going to showcase to your clients. Always bring a lot of backup options for dresses, shoes, and accessories. On the day of the shoot or event, everything can change.

As a Los Angeles stylist, you will need to compete with other stylists for the most wanted dresses. In Hollywood the level for a stylist is very high, all of the celebrities want to be the best dressed for their events so you will need to make sure you are the one who styled them. For red carpet events, like the Oscars you have to be really well-planned and organized.

Wardrobe Stylist in Los Angeles | Gillette Fuse Commercial

Wardrobe Stylist in Los Angeles | Gillette Fuse Commercial

As a wardrobe stylist in Los Angeles, I’ve had the opportunity to work with Gillette. and Justin Bell Productions on their new product launch “Gillette Fuse” commercial.

I had 3 talents/models to style and work on their hair and makeup looks.

The client requested V neck and crew-neck tee options with a not-too-high neckline in solid colors: white, grey and Gillette blues only and for bottoms sweats or non-distracting pajama.

We asked the talents to arrive fresh out of the shower hairstyle and contemporary cut, as the makeup looks go I applied camera-ready makeup. The talents shaved on the camera so they had to have 2-3 days of facial hair.

A professional wardrobe stylist is one of the trending professions within the fashion and commercial world globally. What a wardrobe stylist does is select the clothing and accessories for commercials, editorials, print or TVC advertising campaigns and music videos produced by advertising agencies and production companies. This profession is really essential to these companies because if not for the styling and branding, the message of the commercial will not be communicated across to the audience and customers.

As a TV commercial wardrobe stylist in Los Angeles, I mostly work on TV commercials, branded videos, and campaigns. I really enjoyed collaborating with the production team on this Gillette commercial. I get excited about working with brands and about what I can contribute to their project. Most of all, I love the delight of seeing my work used by clients in some of their major campaigns.

  3. Conceal dark circles and blemishes
  4. Apply foundation evenly matching to your skin tone
  5. Contour and highlight your face

Hollywood Celebrity Wardrobe Stylist | Solstice Magazine Publication

Hollywood Celebrity Wardrobe Stylist | Solstice Magazine Publication

I would like to share an amazing experience I had working as a Hollywood celebrity wardrobe stylist with Tarek Reed fashion photographer. I have already worked with him on a couple of projects,  his works are simply stunning. Tarek Reed is an editorial and commercial photographer, based in Boston, Miami and Los Angeles.

Our model for this editorial photo shoot was Lyssa Roberts, she is a Los Angeles based actress and model. Lyssa was very easy going and professional to work with.

Every story is what makes an outstanding fashion photograph exceptional and every story begins with an idea. Our idea for this shoot was recreating the old Hollywood on a film shoot so we matched Lyssa’s styling and hair makeup according to that style. As a Hollywood celebrity wardrobe stylist, I loved working on this project.

We rented the clothes from a showroom called Le Maison de Fashion on Melrose Avenue, a snug boutique features a range of stylish high-end designer fashions, accessories & shoes for women.

One of the best things about being a celebrity wardrobe stylist is the opportunity to travel all over the world, discover new cities, locations and explore the places you love.

Solstice Magazine was created by Sebastian Santa Maria, a London based fashion photographer. The magazine is a high-quality publication with a view to giving fashion and photographically orientated creatives another platform for expressing themselves through the visual and written mediums.

Los Angeles Wardrobe Stylist | Birdies Evergreen Video

Los Angeles Wardrobe Stylist | Birdies Evergreen Video

I would like to share a great experience I had working as a Los Angeles wardrobe stylist with Tiger House Films commercial production company. I have already worked with THF on numerous projects, as a wardrobe stylist, makeup artist or creative coordinator.

As a Los Angeles wardrobe stylist, I’ve had the opportunity to work with Birdies slippers. In this blog article, I would like to share with you a couple of useful tricks and tips on how I created the styling looks for our model, Olga for this campaign video.

1) Fit is incredibly important. Olga has a perfect shape and everything I bought for this video shooting fit to her incredibly well. I used a lot of black and white, high quality clothes. Ultimately, I really believe you should just wear what you love and what makes you feel happy.

2) I love incorporating silk and classic pieces into my styling and collection. There’s nothing cooler to me than a delicate top worn with stiff vintage jeans and Birdies flats for a day out.

3) Make sure on every take the clothes, shoes fit perfectly, specially when you have multiple models. On the monitor you can watch the video at the same time when the cinematographer is shooting so you can make sure everything looks exactly the way you want it. You need to check the details and at the same time the full image as well.

I’m a wardrobe stylist and these Birdies shoes are something I could wear all day on my feet when I’m on set.

TV Commercial Wardrobe Stylist | New York Life Insurance

TV Commercial Wardrobe Stylist I New York Life Insurance

As a TV commercial wardrobe stylist in California, I had the opportunity of working with Tiger House Films commercial production company’s team on New York Life Insurance videos multiple times during this year.

Our theme for this commercial video production was “Celebrating Milestones: Diwali”
Diwali is a Hindu festival of lights, held in the period October to November. It is particularly associated with Lakshmi, the goddess of prosperity, and marks the beginning of the fiscal year in India. In total, we had approximately 15 cast members for these 3 videos for the same Diwali theme. All of our cast members were bringing multiple wardrobe choices and I prepared outfit options as well as matching to New York Life Insurance previous advertisements.

A commercial wardrobe stylist is one of the most trending businesses within the fashion and commercial world internationally. What a wardrobe stylist does is pick the clothing and accessories for TV commercials, editorials, print or advertising campaigns and music videos produced by advertising agencies and production companies. This profession is really an essential element in the process of creating advertising campaigns and commercials.

As a TV commercial wardrobe stylist based in Los Angeles, I mostly work on TV commercials, branded videos, and campaigns. I really enjoyed collaborating with the creative team on this New York Life Insurance web commercial.

Los Angeles HMUA | Bombino aka Deran Alkheir Dance Video

Los Angeles HMUA | Bombino aka Deran Alkheir Dance Video

As a Los Angeles HMUA, I’ve had the opportunity to work with Bombino aka Deran Alkheir. In this blog article I’ll explain a couple of useful tricks on how I created the hair and makeup looks for the dancers in this production.

I spent most of my time focusing on the female dancer’s smokey eye makeup and lips because these are the only parts of the body Tuaregs show due to the limitations of their traditional clothing. Old or young, male or female, each Tuareg seems to cultivate a personal style expressed through a few simple items of fabric.

For the dancers hair styling we used head wraps called cheches whose fabric can stretch to 18 feet in length, plus flowing gowns called bubus that allow air flow while deflecting heat and blowing sand, dressing like a traditional Tuareg can at first seem a confining enterprise. We had to hide all their hair under these head wraps and adjust it during the shoot. I love my job as a Los Angeles HMUA, I always have the opportunity to work on original and artistic projects.

This music video was directed and produced by Jonathan Wing and choreography by Hillary Pearson. I had 2 dancers from Los Angeles to do hair and makeup for. We shot this video using different color lights which created a futuristic and mysterious environment in a Downtown LA studio.

About Bombino: For centuries, the desert town of Agadez has served as a converging point for the great camel caravans driven by the Tuareg that link West Africa with North Africa and the Mediterranean. Born in 1980 at a nomadic camp near this dusty outpost, the young guitarist and songwriter Omara “Bombino” Moctar was raised during an era of armed struggles for Tuareg independence and violent suppression by government forces. Bombino’s electrifying jams capture the spirit of resistance and rebellion while echoing with guitar riffs reminiscent of fellow Africans Tinariwen and Ali Farka Touré not to mention rock and blues icons such as Jimi Hendrix, John Lee Hooker and Jimmy Page.

TV Advertising Wardrobe Stylist | Kevin De Leon Campaign

TV Advertising Wardrobe Stylist | Kevin De Leon Campaign

I collaborated with WIN ad agency as a TV advertising wardrobe stylist on their Kevin De Leon Campaign. WIN is a media agency that creates strategic campaigns for engaging audiences, driving action and creating change.

I had two actors to style on this TV advertising project. I would like to explain my process as part of making this campaign:

I got call from WIN’s ad agency producer who had my contact through a recommendation. He was asking my availability as a TV advertising wardrobe stylist and makeup artist for this project, which was a political campaign spot for Kevin De Leon. After that he sent me a short brief by email and explained the plan for the shoot. Luckily, I was free on those days and had time to start immediately.

I began working on the pre-production by communicating the specific style the director was going for, which included showcasing a lower-middle class family. I received talent measurements prior to starting the production wardrobe shopping and began my rounds to find just the right color scheme and overall fit for the talent. We didn’t have time for a fitting because our schedule was very tight but I was bringing wardrobe options so we could confirm talent outfits with the director on the day of the shoot.

After the shoot with WIN as a TV advertising wardrobe stylist, I had to do returns and wrap out the project. I had to take care of the accounting as well and report how much I spent from the wardrobe budget in total, to the production team.

You can find the final video and the article on Adweek : https://www.adweek.com/creativity/poignant-campaign-ad-tells-the-story-of-a-candidate-whose-family-could-have-been-separated-by-ice/

In conclusion I loved working with WIN advertising agency and hope we can continue collaborating on upcoming campaigns in the near future.
